ok back to businessβ¦
when i was in nyc early this month, i indulged in my favorite type of on the ground βresearching.β
aimlessly walking the streets of soho and williamsburg with an overpriced coffee in hand. popping into spaces that strike my fancy.
and per usual, something struck me that i canβt stop thinking about.
the sidewalks were pure chaos. sandwich boards battling for concrete real estate, honking cars weaving through delivery trucks, construction noise bouncing off fire escapes, and that particular nyc grime that follows you home.
but the moment i stepped through most store's threshold, it was like entering a parallel universe.
suddenly, everything zenned.
lighting shifted from harsh fluorescent to warm, intentional illumination. every object had been positioned with museum-curator precision. people weren't rushing. they were contemplating, absorbing.
and thatβs when i realized stores are our modern day art galleries.
(c)art galleries if you will.
we're witnessing the complete artification of commerce, especially in cities like nyc which will always be home to the flagship beacons. but whatβs fascinating is itβs not just the big, extra luxxe brands with this feel. itβs almost every store that isnβt positioned for conveniences.
several are putting galleries to shame.
brands are becoming artists, products are becoming installations, and stores are becoming galleries where we journey to feel transformation, not merely acquire objects.
in todayβs letter, you'll learn:
βΒ the unexpected script retail borrowed straight from the art world
βΒ how brands turn everyday products into artifacts worth contemplating
βΒ what we lose when stores disappear without a trace

the gallery strategy
once upon a time, art galleries used to be intimidating, exclusive spaces where you whispered and definitely didn't touch anything. then somewhere along the way, galleries realized that accessibility = sustainability.
they started hosting opening nights with wine, interactive installations, and experiences that made art feel approachable to all.
youβve made it to the good part π
